Former IMA Vice President Suspended Amid Controversy

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has suspended the membership of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Hospital, following serious allegations related to his response to a tragic incident involving a postgraduate resident doctor.

This decision, made by the IMA’s disciplinary committee, comes in light of a recent rape and murder case that has garnered significant attention and concern within the medical community.

The IMA announced that the disciplinary committee, constituted by the national president R.V. Asokan, took this action on August 28, 2024. The committee believed that Dr. Ghosh’s behavior in handling the case lacked the necessary empathy and sensitivity expected of someone in his position.

Moreover, the IMA general secretary and President Asokan had previously met with the parents of the victim, who expressed their grievances regarding Dr. Ghosh’s conduct in the aftermath of the incident.

The order from the IMA highlights the disrepute that Dr. Ghosh’s actions have brought upon the medical profession, prompting calls for accountability from various associations and branches of doctors across the region.

As a result of these factors, the disciplinary committee unanimously decided to suspend Dr. Ghosh from the Indian Medical Association with immediate effect.
