The City of Tshwane announced the unfortunate passing of the former mayor, Murunwa Makwarela. Tshwane’s Council Speaker, Mncedi Ndzwanana, confirmed that Makwarela had passed away on Tuesday morning.
With a career that saw him serve as both the executive mayor and the speaker, Makwarela’s tenure was marked by significant political challenges.
Ndzwanana expressed deep sadness at the loss, extending his condolences to Makwarela’s family and the residents of Tshwane.
Current Tshwane Mayor, Cilliers Brink, also shared his sorrows over Makwarela’s passing, acknowledging their past differences but emphasizing his respect for Makwarela’s dedication to service.
City of Johannesburg Council Speaker, Margaret Arnolds, joined in offering condolences, highlighting Makwarela’s remarkable leadership and dedication to public service.
Arnolds noted that Makwarela’s legacy will continue to inspire all those who worked alongside him in the political landscape.
In a recent appearance at the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court related to an insolvency matter, Makwarela’s fraud case was not removed from the court roll, adding another layer of complexity to his legacy.
