Fox Corp. Launches Streaming Platform, Fox One, on August 21

NEW YORK, NY — Fox Corp. is entering the streaming market with its new platform, Fox One, set to launch on August 21. This move comes as the number of households without cable hits 65 million in the U.S., prompting the company to adapt to changing viewer habits.
Fox One will offer subscribers access to their local Fox TV affiliate, providing coverage of NFL games and two Fox Sports cable channels for $19.99 a month. A full year’s subscription will be available for $199. The service also features Fox News and Fox Business channels, on-demand programming, and unlimited DVR storage.
“There is a growing audience outside of cable,” said Pete Distad, Fox Corp.’s chief executive of direct-to-consumer. “We need to give those cord-cutters and cord-nevers access to our content.” He made this statement during a press briefing in New York.”
A major highlight of Fox One will be its coverage of live events, including next year’s FIFA World Cup, marketed with the tagline, “We Live For Live.” The platform aims to capitalize on the popularity of sports, which has been a significant driver for many streaming services.
Moreover, Fox has partnered with Walt Disney Co. to offer bundled packages that include Fox One and ESPN for $39.99 a month, a $10 savings compared to subscribing separately.
Despite its late entry into the streaming market, Fox Corp. is optimistic about the potential audience. Distad noted that Fox News garnered 1.5 billion views on YouTube and 3.7 billion views across social media in the last quarter, indicating a strong interest in its content.
Fox One’s pricing strategy aims to attract consumers who may hesitate to cancel cable subscriptions. Distad stated that while profit projections are aggressive, the platform will capitalize on existing content rather than invest in new programming, which has hindered profitability for many streaming services.
Fox Nation, an existing streaming service offering documentaries and true crime shows, will be available as a $5 add-on, bringing the total monthly cost to $24.99 for subscribers.
As Fox Corp. embarks on this new journey into streaming, the success of Fox One will largely depend on consumer willingness to pay for Fox News and other live content.
