Franklin Chili Cook Off Trophies And Community

Franklin, TN – The aroma of chili filled the air at Bicentennial Park on Saturday, October 25, as the revived Franklin Chili Cook-Off attracted over 100 participants. Attendees sampled nine unique chili recipes from local restaurants and nonprofits, casting their votes for the best in each category. While some guests opted for bowls of chili, hot dogs, and chips, others enjoyed sampling the culinary creations on offer.

This year, 55 South took first place among four competing restaurants, while the Franklin Firefighters Association won the same honor in the nonprofit category. The revival of the cook-off was a collaborative effort by the Franklin Rotary Club at Breakfast and the Firefighters Association.

David Williams, a member of the Franklin Fire Department, expressed his hopes for expanding the event’s success. “The main thing is getting people out here. We’re hoping to bring awareness to people. Hopefully, next year we’ll make it even better than ever,” he stated.

Contestants included popular local eateries such as 1799 at the Harpeth Hotel, Corner Pub, and Half Way Market. Nonprofits competing included the Franklin Noon Rotary/Franklin Rodeo, Knights of Columbus, Sister Cities of Franklin and Williamson County, and A Vintage Affair.

Before the event concluded, Breakfast Rotary member Doug Kidd highlighted the festive atmosphere, saying, “We live in Franklin and we just love it. We try to make the most of the festivals.” His wife, Cheryl Kidd, praised the new location, emphasizing their enjoyment of the nearby pavilion area.

While the competitors maintained the secrecy of their recipes, Lt. Brian Daugherty of the Franklin Fire Department shared what makes their chili special: “It has good flavor, everything’s pretty much fresh, and it has a little bite to it.” Carrie Drury, from A Vintage Affair, added to the excitement by revealing a secret ingredient in their chili: “There’s a little red wine in it.” The community enjoyed a lively day filled with friendly competition, bringing together local flavors and camaraderie.
