Giant Squid Unveils Sword of the Sea Release Date Trailer

LOS ANGELES, CA – Giant Squid, the developer behind the critically acclaimed games Journey and ABZÛ, has officially revealed the release date trailer for its next title, Sword of the Sea. The trailer premiered during the PlayStation State of Play on June 4, 2025, showcasing breathtaking visuals and an expansive world.
Sword of the Sea invites players to use a unique traversal system on a Hoversword, seamlessly transitioning through vibrant landscapes filled with deserts, oceans, and icy terrains. Players can expect fast-paced gameplay akin to skateboarding while exploring a lost ocean rich in life. The game is set to launch on August 19, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5 and will also be available in the PlayStation Game Catalog for Extra and Premium subscribers.
“We aimed to combine the artistic atmosphere of Journey with the thrill of skating,” Giant Squid noted in a release. The design encourages players to build speed and perform tricks across its wavy terrains, enhancing the overall gameplay experience.
This project marks a return to form for the studio, founded by former Journey developer Matt Nava, and signals an exciting new chapter for fans. The new environmental aesthetics and mechanics previously teased at the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023 have piqued interest within the gaming community.
In addition to the gameplay features, the game will feature an original score composed by Austin Wintory, known for his work on Journey and ABZÛ, further elevating the immersive experience. With a release date set, excitement continues to build for what promises to be a visually stunning adventure.
Sword of the Sea is positioned to be a major highlight of the 2025 gaming calendar, with expectations of excellent visuals and engaging gameplay. Mark your calendars for August 19.
