Giants Remain Committed to Wilson Despite QB Struggles

New York, NY — The New York Giants have decided to stick with veteran quarterback Russell Wilson despite a lackluster performance in the season opener. After a 21-6 loss to the Washington Commanders, conversations emerged about the potential for rookie Jaxson Dart to take over the starting role. However, sources informed ESPN that the team feels there’s ‘no sense of urgency’ to make that switch.
Head coach Brian Daboll confirmed on Monday that Wilson would remain the starter heading into Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. Wilson, 36, completed only 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards in the opener, and he was also the team’s leading rusher with 44 yards.
Dart, selected by the Giants in the first round of the NFL Draft, has shown promise in preseason games, throwing three touchdowns and demonstrating impressive passing efficiency. Despite this, the Giants wish to give Wilson more time to improve and allow Dart to develop further.
The team’s strategy is complicated by the ongoing absence of left tackle Andrew Thomas, who is rehabbing from a Lisfranc injury. The Giants believe having a reliable offensive line is crucial before introducing Dart to the intensity of NFL games.
Dart is focusing on preparation and supporting Wilson for now. ‘I’m just preparing for whatever chance I get,’ Dart said. His goal is to be ready whenever called upon, dismissing outside pressure for him to start. Dart added, ‘You have to take all that with a grain of salt, and my job is to control what I can control.’
While Dart’s time in the starting role isn’t imminent, the Giants are aware of their challenging schedule in the upcoming weeks. They face several playoff contenders in the next seven games, making the decision to transition to Dart a cautious one.
