Google‘s Gemini AI has made significant strides in recent updates, positioning it as a leader in the large language model (LLM) landscape. The latest version, Gemini 1.5 Pro and Gemini 1.5 Flash, integrated into JetBrains AI Assistant, marks a notable advancement in AI technology.

The integration with JetBrains AI Assistant allows developers to leverage multiple LLMs, including Google’s Gemini models, OpenAI models, and local models. This multi-model approach enhances the AI Assistant’s capabilities, offering advanced reasoning, improved performance, and cost efficiency, particularly with Gemini 1.5 Flash.

Google Gemini 1.5 Pro and 1.5 Flash are hosted on Google Cloud‘s Vertex AI, enabling developers to connect these models with external systems, APIs, and data sources. This functionality, known as “function calling” and “grounding,” allows the AI to retrieve real-time information and perform more dynamic and versatile actions. For instance, developers can build AI agents for trip planning that generate personalized travel itineraries based on real-time data.

In terms of performance, Google’s Gemini models have surpassed OpenAI’s models in several benchmarks. The latest experimental model, Gemini Experience 1121, has shown significant gains in coding performance, stronger reasoning capabilities, and improved visual understanding. It currently ranks number one in various categories such as coding, vision, math, and creative writing on the LLM leaderboards.

The enhanced capabilities of Gemini AI are also evident in its ability to generate realistic images. In a recent test comparing AI image generators, Google Gemini delivered highly realistic images of Thanksgiving dishes, though some lacked the desired presentation and realism compared to other platforms like Meta AI.

These updates and integrations underscore Google’s commitment to advancing AI technology and providing developers with powerful tools to build more sophisticated and personalized AI applications.
