Google has issued a critical warning to Android users, urging those with devices running Android 12 through 15 to update their systems immediately. The January 2025 Android security bulletin, published on Jan. 6, reveals multiple high-severity vulnerabilities, including a critical flaw in the System component that could allow remote code execution without additional privileges.

The vulnerabilities, five of which are classified as critical, affect the Android System component. Google has not released extensive technical details to prevent exploitation but confirmed that devices running Android 12 through 15 are particularly at risk. The company emphasized the importance of updating to the latest security patch level, 2025-01-05 or later, to mitigate these threats.

“The most severe of these issues is a critical security vulnerability in the System component,” Google stated in its bulletin. “Exploitation for many issues on Android is made more difficult by enhancements in newer versions of the Android platform.” The Android security team also highlighted the role of Google Play Protect, which monitors for malicious activity and is enabled by default on devices with Google Mobile Services.

In addition to the security updates, Google has rolled out its first Pixel update for 2025, covering devices from the Pixel 6 series to the newly launched Pixel 9 lineup. While the update is primarily focused on bug fixes, it underscores Google’s ongoing efforts to address vulnerabilities across its ecosystem. Users are encouraged to update their devices via over-the-air updates or manually through factory images or OTA files.

For those unsure about the update process, Google provides detailed instructions on flashing factory images and OTA files. The company also works with carrier partners like Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T to ensure timely distribution of updates. As cyber threats continue to evolve, Google’s proactive approach aims to safeguard millions of Android users worldwide.
