U.S. Government Offers Free COVID-19 Tests as Respiratory Virus Season Looms
The United States government has announced the commencement of a new distribution phase for free COVID-19 tests as of September 26, 2024. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), households across the country are eligible to order four free COVID-19 tests. These tests are designed to detect current variants and will be operational until the end of the year.
“U.S. households will be eligible to order 4 free COVID-19 tests,” stated the Department of Health and Human Services. The tests are intended to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment, potentially curbing the transmission of COVID-19. Since the inception of this initiative, more than 900 million tests have already been distributed, aiding individuals in testing themselves efficiently.
The return of at-home COVID testing coincides with the social gatherings typical during the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas seasons, when the risk of virus transmission may increase. As the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director Dr. Mandy Cohen indicated, “The best plan going into this winter is for everyone to remain vigilant, to use the tools we have: vaccines, testing, treatment against the illnesses responsible for the majority of fall and winter deaths and hospitalizations,” as reported by CNN.
Additionally, all vaccines tailored to current strains of the virus are now available at pharmacies nationwide. This includes RNA-based vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer, targeting the KP.2 'FLiRT' variant, and a protein-based alternative from Novavax aimed at the JN.1 variant. Healthcare experts have confirmed that it is permissible to receive both a COVID-19 vaccine and a flu shot simultaneously.
Dawn O’Connell, assistant secretary for preparedness and response at HHS, emphasized during a media briefing, “As families start to move indoors this fall and begin spending time with their loved ones, both very old and very young, they will once again have the opportunity to order up to four new COVID-19 tests free of charge and have them sent directly to their homes. These tests will help keep families and their loved ones safe this fall and winter season.”
Current data from the CDC indicates that the KP.3.1.1 variant, an offshoot of the omicron variant, is the dominant strain in the United States, accounting for approximately 52.7% of new cases. Despite ongoing COVID-19 cases reported by various laboratories, Dr. Cohen highlighted a positive trend during the briefing: “Circulating COVID disease is not translating into similar increases in emergency room visits and hospitalizations or deaths.”
