In a strategic move, Carlton Football Club has appointed Graham Wright as its incoming chief executive officer. The announcement is expected to be made on Wednesday, confirming Wright’s succession to the current CEO, Brian Cook. Wright is set to assume the role after a tenure as the football operations head at Collingwood and Hawthorn, winning premierships with both clubs.

Wright’s departure from his role at Collingwood came after their 2023 premiership win, opting for a sabbatical to travel overseas. His return to the football administration scene has been keenly anticipated, with interest reportedly shown by the Adelaide Crows, the new Tasmanian team, and the AFL itself. However, Wright ultimately chose to join Carlton, motivated by his long-standing ambition to transition into a CEO role.

Carlton President Luke Sayers, along with the club’s board and the outgoing CEO Brian Cook, played a significant part in the recruitment process. Wright’s appointment is seen as a significant coup for the Blues, who are eager to build on their legacy and secure their first championship title since 1995.

Sam Edmund of SEN commented Wednesday, “Graham Wright will be the CEO-elect at the Blues. This has been a 12-month operation from the Blues to find the successor for Brian Cook. Wright, formerly of Collingwood and Hawthorn, is anticipated to lead as one of the sharpest administrators in the business.”

Prior to his new appointment, Wright’s career in football management spanned key roles, including serving as the list manager with Hawthorn and progressing to football boss at both Hawthorn and Collingwood. This breadth of experience is expected to bring strategic insights to Carlton as the club embarks on its new phase of leadership.
