Great Value Apple Juice Recall Due to Inorganic Arsenic Contamination
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for a specific batch of Great Value Apple Juice sold at Walmart stores. This recall affects 9,535 eight-ounce bottles that were packaged in a six-pack with PET plastic containers, bearing the UPC 0-78742-29655-5.
On August 15, the FDA announced that the apple juice contains inorganic arsenic levels that exceed the action level set in industry guidelines. As of August 23, the recall has been escalated to a Class II designation, which implies that the product poses a risk of temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects, although the likelihood of serious health risks remains very low.
The FDA has noted that inorganic arsenic is more hazardous than its organic counterpart. Long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic in adults may be associated with various health issues, including skin disorders, an increased likelihood of skin, bladder, and lung cancers, and cardiovascular disease. Symptoms of short-term exposure may include nausea, vomiting, bruising, and tingling sensations in the extremities.
According to the FDA report, Refresco Beverages US Inc., located in Tampa, Florida, is responsible for the recall. The affected batch of Great Value Apple Juice has a best if used by date of December 28, 2024.
The recall applies to Great Value Apple Juice sold in multiple states and regions. Consumers are advised to check their products and adhere to the guidance provided by the FDA regarding this recall.
