Heavy Traffic Expected at SC Fair and Gamecocks Game
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Heavy traffic and crowded parking lots are anticipated Saturday at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds due to two major events: the South Carolina State Fair and a University of South Carolina Gamecocks home football game against Oklahoma. The kickoff for the game is set for 12:45 p.m., and the fair opens its gates at 10 a.m.
With an estimated attendance exceeding 100,000 people for both events, the South Carolina Highway Patrol is urging attendees to plan ahead and exercise patience. “Pack your patience,” said Master Trooper William Bennett. He added that it will take time to manage the influx of visitors and that post-game traffic is likely to be congested.
Troopers will be present to direct traffic and assist pedestrians. Bennett stressed the importance of being alert when walking and driving near the stadium and fairgrounds. “Look out for pedestrians,” he said, encouraging everyone to pay close attention when crossing roads.
Parking will be scarce, as some lots that typically accept season passes for football games will not be valid for fair crowds. The Lexington Medical Center lot, situated between the stadium and the fairgrounds, will charge $20 for parking and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tailgating will not be allowed on fair property.
Fair organizers report they are close to matching last year’s attendance and hope this busy weekend will help them exceed it. “We’re hoping folks come into the fair, then go enjoy the game, maybe come back after,” said Nancy Smith, general manager of the South Carolina State Fair.
Visitors are expressing excitement about experiencing both events. Samantha Harvey, who traveled from Charleston for the weekend, said, “We come up for all the home games. Adding the fair on top of it is the cherry on top. You’ve got to plan ahead, expect some delays, but we’re all Gamecocks, we’re all South Carolinians — it’s all worth it.”
