Holland America Cruise Offers Enriching Onboard Experience
Holland America Line‘s cruise ships, known for their distinctive names ending in “dam,” offer a unique travel experience that extends beyond just reaching a destination. From the historic Volendam to the modern Rotterdam, the ships are designed to provide passengers with a range of activities, from engaging in recreational sports like pickleball to savoring diverse culinary delights.
Recently, Holland America’s newest addition, the Rotterdam, embarked on a 7-day Norse Legends itinerary through Norway. According to passengers, the experience on the Rotterdam emphasized the ship’s numerous onboard activities as much as the scenic destinations visited. “The activities and amenities onboard were so engaging that many passengers chose to continue exploring the ship rather than disembark at every port,” said a passenger.
Despite having visited Norway several times, the allure of Holland America’s culinary offerings and entertainment kept passengers occupied. The cuisine onboard features a variety of options, including specialty restaurants such as Tamarind and Rudi’s Sel de Mer, along with popular spots like the Grand Dutch Café and New York Deli & Pizza.
Interestingly, the cruise’s passenger demographic influenced the availability of activities, such as pickleball, due to a predominantly Dutch crowd. “We had the pickleball courts almost entirely to ourselves,” noted one passenger, highlighting the lesser popularity of pickleball in Europe compared to the United States.
Another feature that captured the attention of guests was Rotterdam’s lending library, offering an impressive selection of literature. “The library had multiple copies of bestsellers and classics, encouraging shared reading experiences,” a guest shared. The ship’s art collection, valued at over $4.1 million, further embellished the cruise, providing a gallery-like atmosphere with themed art in different stairwells.
Holland America’s commitment to enriching onboard experiences is evident in their offerings such as the “Cake Me Away” dessert event, showcasing an array of intricate five-layer cakes. For enthusiasts of traditional games, Sjoelen, or Dutch shuffleboard, was a novel addition to the Rotterdam’s activities.
As cruise lines continue to enhance their itineraries and onboard amenities, Holland America Line maintains its focus on providing a balanced mix of cultural immersion and onboard indulgence, fostering a loyal customer base eager for their next “dam ship” adventure.
