Hurricane Milton Boca Grande

As Hurricane Milton looms near, officials in Boca Grande have taken precautionary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of the community. At 11:08 a.m. on October 9, 2024, Boca Grande Fire Department Chief C.W. Blosser communicated an urgent message to local residents. Chief Blosser announced that The Island School would remain closed until October 11 and urged residents staying in the area to notify the department of their whereabouts. “We are leaving in 15 minutes,” stated Blosser, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

The Gasparilla Island Water Authority has issued a “Precautionary Boil Water Notice,” in light of the hurricane’s approach and the associated temporary loss of water pressure. Executive Director Ron Bolton confirmed the imminent shutdown of the water system until the threat has passed. According to Bolton, “This notice is for customers that receive their water from within the boundary area specified above and lost water pressure.” Residents are advised to boil all water used for cooking, drinking, or oral hygiene for at least one minute, while water for bathing, laundry, and irrigation remains safe for use.

The boil water advisory will be in place until testing confirms the safety of the supply, which is expected no earlier than October 15, 2024. Bolton added, “All fixtures should be run for several minutes to clear the lines in your home.” Queries can be directed to the Gasparilla Island Water Association Inc. at 941-964-2423 during normal business hours.

In related developments, evacuation orders have been issued for coastal islands and zones by authorities in Lee County and Charlotte County. These measures come as part of the broader regional response to the potential impacts of Hurricane Milton.
