Icon 4×4 Unveils Electric Bronco Prototype in Southern California Test Drive

LOS ANGELES, CA — Icon 4×4 has reached a milestone with its electric Bronco prototype, nearly ready for customer production. This groundbreaking vehicle, developed in partnership with Austin-based electric-conversion specialist Marc Davis, marks a significant step in merging classic off-roading with modern electric vehicle technology.
The prototype incorporates a 500 horsepower electric motor mounted longitudinally at the center of the frame, empowering the vehicle with impressive torque and acceleration capabilities. With a weight of around 5,400 pounds, the EV Bronco can reach zero to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, outpacing its traditional gas-powered counterparts.
Two battery modules, providing a total of 105 kilowatt-hours, enable the prototype to achieve a range of approximately 175 to 200 miles. Protecting these crucial components, Icon has equipped the vehicle with solid skid plates and custom armor.
During a recent test drive through the hills of Southern California, both Ward and Davis accompanied the team to provide insights into the development process. “We wanted to create a vehicle that anyone could just jump in and enjoy,” said Icon founder Jonathan Ward, emphasizing accessibility in their design approach.
Ward and Davis first crossed paths while visiting Austin. “I always noticed his detail and elegance in the retrofits he was doing,” Ward recalled. Their partnership aimed to deliver a product that meets Ward’s high standards, blending style and power with cutting-edge technology.
The new suspension system features Reiger shock dampers to manage weight and body roll while delivering a comfortable ride, a notable improvement over traditional models. Achieving a balance in weight distribution has been a crucial consideration, and the prototype incorporates a unique steering system that melds classic styling with modern functionality.
“We really wanted to keep the old-school feel of driving a Bronco,” Davis said, noting the innovative hydraulic steering system powered by an electric pump. The setup allows for better precision without sacrificing the vehicle’s classic aesthetics.
Despite the advanced technology, Ward acknowledged that further work is needed to fine-tune the prototype to meet customer expectations. He intentionally left off sound-dampening materials to identify and address any unwanted noises, highlighting the ongoing development process.
Both Ward and Davis recognized that while some traditionalists may resist the idea of an electrified Bronco, wider acceptance among customers is imminent. “There’s always going to be guys who miss carburetors, and that’s cool,” Ward stated. “But I think this widens our appeal and brings in a demographic that previously would’ve just been stone-age-old fossil burners.”
The initial run of 10 limited-edition EV Broncos will be available starting at $449,000, with deliveries anticipated in the first quarter of 2026. The vehicle will be offered in both Old School and New School specifications, catering to a variety of customer preferences.
As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, Icon’s electric Bronco represents a commitment to innovation while honoring classic design principles. The synergy between traditional craftsmanship and modern technology sets a new standard in vehicle development.
