SHENZHEN, China — Italy advanced to the Billie Jean King Cup final for the third consecutive year after defeating Ukraine 2-1 in the semifinals on Friday.

Jasmine Paolini played a crucial role for the Italians, coming back to win her singles match against Elina Svitolina before teaming up with Sara Errani for a decisive doubles victory.

The match started with World No. 26 Marta Kostyuk giving Ukraine a strong lead by defeating Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-2, 6-3. Kostyuk did not face a single break point in her match, converting four of eight chances on Cocciaretto’s serve.

Paolini, ranked No. 8 in the world, evened the tie by overcoming a set and a break deficit to secure a comeback victory against No. 13 Svitolina, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Paolini has now won six of her last seven Billie Jean King Cup matches.

After leveling the score, Italy relied on its experienced doubles duo of Paolini and Errani. The pair quickly took control of the doubles match against Kostyuk and Lyudmyla Kichenok, establishing an early 3-0 lead before winning the first set 6-2. Despite a brief challenge in the second set, the Italians rallied to close out the match 6-2, 6-2, securing their spot in Sunday’s final.

Italy, which previously won the Cup in 2024, will face either the United States or Great Britain in the championship match. The Americans will meet Great Britain in the semifinals, with the British team seeking its first title.
