Jack Karlson, the ‘Democracy Manifest’ Guy, Passes Away
Jack Karlson, the man who became famous for the phrase “this is democracy manifest,” has sadly passed away at the age of 82. He was known as a personality who lived a colorful life, marked by his run-ins with the law.
Karlson gained notoriety back in 1991 after a cheeky arrest outside a Chinese restaurant, the China Sea Restaurant, in Brisbane‘s Fortitude Valley. During the arrest, he was accused of credit card fraud. He dramatically declared, “What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?” and this moment became iconic.
The video of his arrest made its way to the internet in 2009, and since then, it has been viewed millions of times, inspiring countless memes and even merchandise. Chris Reason, a Channel 7 journalist who covered Karlson’s arrest, honored him by saying, “Mr Democracy Manifest has died,” highlighting his impact on Australian culture.
In recent years, Jack struggled with several health issues, including advanced cancer, cataracts, and spinal problems. Yet, he still had a significant moment earlier this year when he reunited with one of the police officers who arrested him, Stoll Watt, at the very same restaurant.
Despite his checkered past, which included being a serial prison escaper, many who knew him spoke fondly of his vibrant personality. Stoll Watt considered him a friend, recalling Karlson as a “larger-than-life” character with a big heart.
Mark Dapin, an author who wrote about Karlson, emphasized that he should be remembered as an entertainer. He believed that given a different upbringing, Karlson could have excelled as an artist, saying he was “extremely bright” and had the potential to be a painter or actor.
Even during his time in prison, Karlson participated in many productions and showcased his talents. Now, he leaves behind a legacy that resonates through the countless t-shirts, memes, and a documentary currently in the making called ‘The Man Who Ate a Succulent Chinese Meal.’
