Jean Rather And Dan Rather

Jean Rather, the beloved wife of renowned news anchor Dan Rather, has passed away at the age of 89. Her death, attributed to cancer, was announced on November 26 through a heartfelt statement on Dan’s official Facebook page. Jean passed away surrounded by loved ones and her treasured artwork at the couple’s home in Austin, Texas, where she had been receiving hospice care.

Born Jean Goebel in Smithville, Texas, Jean lived a full and varied life. She met Dan while working at a radio station in Houston, and the couple married in 1954. Their 67-year marriage took them to various locations worldwide, including Dallas, Washington, D.C., London, and New York City, before they returned to Texas in 2021. Throughout their marriage, Jean was a constant support to Dan, described by the family as a “steadfast advisor and rock” who faced every challenge with grace.

In addition to her roles as wife and mother, Jean made her mark as an artist. Her paintings were displayed in galleries and private collections across the country. She also served eight years as vice chair of the New York City Art Commission and participated in boards such as the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Despite her achievements, she remained modest and focused on supporting her family.

Jean Rather is survived by her husband, Dan, their children, and extended family members. Her passing has left family and friends deeply saddened, despite her illness being well-known.
