Jimmy Kimmel’s Show Suspended After Controversial Comments on Charlie Kirk’s Death

NEW YORK (AP) — ABC has suspended Jimmy Kimmel‘s late-night show indefinitely, starting Wednesday. This action follows remarks Kimmel made about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during his show, prompting backlash from some ABC stations and officials.
Kimmel, who has hosted the show since 2003, discussed the reactions to Kirk’s death in several segments aired Monday and Tuesday. He suggested that many in the ‘MAGA land’ were attempting to exploit the tragedy for political gain. His comments were instantly met with condemnation from Nexstar Communications Group, which oversees 23 ABC affiliates.
Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, stated that Kimmel’s remarks were “offensive and insensitive” at a crucial time when political discourse is already strained. The network moved swiftly after Nexstar announced it would not air Kimmel’s show starting Wednesday.
There was no immediate comment from Kimmel regarding the suspension, and ABC did not provide specific reasons for the show’s interruption. Kimmel’s current contract extends until May 2026.
In the wake of Kimmel’s comments, former President Donald Trump praised ABC for taking action against the late-night host, calling it a courageous move on social media. Meanwhile, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr criticized Kimmel’s statements as “truly sick” and indicated that the agency might hold him and the parent company, Walt Disney Co., accountable for spreading misinformation.
Kimmel suggested that Kirk’s alleged murderer, Tyler Robinson, might align with pro-Trump sentiments during his monologue. He stated, “The MAGA Gang is desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.”
Authorities revealed that Robinson, 22, had a conservative upbringing in Utah but had shifted toward progressive beliefs in recent months. His parents informed investigators about his changed political views before the tragic incident.
As both Disney and Nexstar are seeking regulatory approval for business deals, some analysts suggest that reinstating Kimmel could risk the wrath of Trump, who has vocally criticized late-night shows targeting him.
Kimmel was spotted leaving the Hollywood studio after the decision was announced, wearing casual attire and avoiding questions from reporters. Audience members waiting to see his show were surprised when they were told it was canceled just moments before entering the theater.
This incident comes amidst a broader conversation about political violence following Kirk’s assassination. In Washington, Representative Seth Moulton faced threats after he urged President Trump to denounce the violence from both the right and left.
