Seattle Kraken Rookie Jani Nyman Hockey Game

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle Kraken prospect Jani Nyman has been called up to the NHL, set to make his debut against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night at Climate Pledge Arena. The 20-year-old forward, who led all American Hockey League rookies with 26 goals this season, has been instrumental to the Coachella Valley Firebirds’ success.

Nyman’s path to the NHL has been remarkable. Last May, he scored his first AHL goal in a power play during a playoff game that helped the Firebirds sweep their best-of-five series. Although the Finnish player struggled with his English at first, he confidently addressed the media after practice on Tuesday, showcasing his growth.

“Oh, this is the biggest — a big thing for my family and me,” Nyman said, revealing that his parents were flying in from Finland to witness his debut. “We are so excited.”

Coach Dan Bylsma has expressed his confidence in Nyman, stating that the rookie will receive significant playing time during even-strength and power play situations. “We’re not going to ease him in,” Bylsma said. “He’s a goal scorer with a heavy shot, and he will have a chance to show that.”

Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 217 pounds, Nyman’s physicality and presence on the ice have made him stand out. The forward’s impressive goal-scoring ability was highlighted in the junior leagues in Finland, where he became the fourth-highest goal scorer under the age of 20 in the top pro league. His shot has been noted as a key aspect of his playing style.

“You have to notice his shot; that’s a big part of him being an effective player,” Bylsma emphasized. “But he’s also developed an all-around game, continually improving his skating.”

As Nyman prepares for his first NHL game, he will have the support of fellow Finnish teammates Eeli Tolvanen and Kaapo Kakko in the locker room, easing his transition into the league. “It’s great to have new friends,” he said.

The Kraken are embarking on a three-game homestand, starting with the match against Montreal, followed by games against the Utah Grizzlies and a reunion with former player Brandon Tanev from the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday.

Nyman marks a bright spot in a season that has been tumultuous for the Kraken, who recently traded four players at the NHL Trade Deadline. Bylsma remarked on the team’s focus going forward, stating, “The deadline and the events… are introspective to where you’re at in the season. As a group, the guys realize we’re not where we want to be.”

With hopes riding on his debut, Nyman aims to capitalize on this career milestone and contribute to the Kraken’s future success. “I want to help the team win games,” he said. “There’s still time in the season to meet that.”
