Labor Union Backs Graham Platner in Maine Senate Race
PORTLAND, Maine — The United Auto Workers (UAW) endorsed Graham Platner in his bid against Gov. Janet Mills in the 2026 Senate race. The announcement was made on Wednesday, solidifying Platner’s growing momentum in a crowded Democratic primary.
UAW President Shawn Fain highlighted Platner’s working-class origins and called him a true advocate for the labor force, stating, “Inequality is out of control in our country. Graham understands this, and he has chosen to stand with the working class.” The endorsement adds to Platner’s backing from the Maine State Nurses Association and the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers.
On the same day the UAW announced its support, Mills claimed to have raised over $1 million in the first 24 hours of her campaign launch. Mills aims to replace Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who has served since 1997 and is seeking her sixth term.
Mills emphasized her commitment to tackling issues such as healthcare, clean energy, and education. “I’ve stood up to bullies all my life,” Mills said, addressing her confrontations with the Trump administration regarding policies impacting Maine.
Meanwhile, Platner’s campaign continues to gain traction. Since announcing his candidacy in August, he has received substantial grassroots support, raising around $500,000 in small donations since Mills’ announcement.
Senator Bernie Sanders weighed in on the race, calling Platner a “great working class candidate” and expressing disappointment over the potential for an internal primary fight between Mills and Platner.
In addition to his union backing, Platner also received praise from Fain about his focus on critical issues: “He’s focused on the real problems facing workers across this country.” As the Democratic primary heats up, voters and political analysts alike are closely watching the unfolding dynamics.
