Walker Kessler Trade Rumors Lakers

Los Angeles, CA — The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly interested in acquiring Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz, but negotiations may face obstacles due to the Jazz’s high asking price. As the NBA offseason progresses, Kessler, a 23-year-old center, has become a prime target for the Lakers, who are in search of a new starting center.

Kessler finished his last season with impressive stats, averaging 12.2 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game. He is set to play next season under a $4.9 million club option, making him an appealing option for the Lakers, who are currently about $6 million under the tax threshold.

Reports indicate that the Jazz may be requesting two first-round picks and a young player in return for Kessler. Sources suggest that this high price tag could hinder any potential deal, as the Lakers currently possess only one tradable first-round pick in the next seven years, set to arrive in 2031 or 2032.

ESPN analyst Jovan Buha commented, “The Lakers cannot do that trade. They can do one pick, one young player, and a swap.” Buha also suggested the possibility of including swaps or removing protections on the Jazz’s 2027 first-round pick in negotiations.

This isn’t the first attempt by the Lakers to acquire Kessler. Previous efforts during the last season revealed that the Jazz’s demands were too steep for Los Angeles, which subsequently pursued other options.

As the offseason continues, the Lakers are exploring other center options as well. They have shown interest in several players, including Onyeka Okongwu, Nic Claxton, and former All-Star Brook Lopez, although none of these veterans are seen as long-term solutions.

Should Kessler remain with the Jazz, there is speculation that he might sign a multi-year extension. However, trade discussions are expected to spark interest as the teams continue their offseason evaluations.
