Lakeshore Flood Watch Issued for Erie and Chautauqua Counties
Buffalo, NY — The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a lakeshore flood watch on Tuesday at 12:46 p.m., anticipating conditions favorable for flooding along the shore of Lake Erie. The watch will be in effect from Wednesday at 7 p.m. until Thursday at 10 a.m. for Northern Erie, Southern Erie, and Chautauqua counties.
The NWS reports that a rapid rise in water levels at the eastern end of Lake Erie is expected to create potential flooding along the shoreline. Flooding may impact Route 5 in Hamburg, Buffalo Harbor, Canalside, Dunkirk Harbor, and other areas known to be vulnerable.
The service notes that high wave action could also result in significant erosion along the shore. “A Lakeshore Flood Watch means that conditions favorable for lakeshore flooding are expected to develop,” stated an NWS spokesperson.
Residents living near the shore are advised to take precautions to protect their property. The NWS recommends listening to local news outlets and NOAA Weather Radio for ongoing updates and further warnings.
In addition to the lakeshore flood watch, the NWS provided guidelines for safety during possible flooding. If you are in a flood-prone area, the first step is to move to higher ground. Heed any evacuation orders promptly, and, if possible, disconnect utilities to reduce the risk of electrical hazards.
Individuals should avoid basements and submerged areas, as flooded rooms can pose serious electrical dangers. If trapped by rising waters, seek higher ground immediately and call emergency services at 911.
During periods of heavy rain, flooding can occur quickly, even in areas not receiving rain. The NWS emphasizes the importance of staying informed and taking proactive measures to ensure safety.
