Lewis Hamilton Set to Join Ferrari in 2025
Lewis Hamilton, the record-breaking seven-time Formula 1 world champion, is reportedly on the verge of a sensational move from Mercedes to Ferrari in 2025, according to multiple sources.
Hamilton, known for having the most wins in F1 history, signed a two-year contract extension with Mercedes last year, but it appears that the second year of that contract may have been an option. Although neither Mercedes nor Ferrari have commented on the matter, sources insist the deal is practically done.
If the move materializes, Hamilton will replace Spanish driver Carlos Sainz at Ferrari. The storied Italian team, often regarded as the most influential in F1, has been craving a drivers’ title since Kimi Raikkonen’s victory in 2007.
Tied with Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher with seven titles, Hamilton now has a chance to end Ferrari’s drought and establish himself as the most successful driver in F1 history. A championship win with Ferrari would also make him the first driver in over six decades to secure titles with three different teams, akin to Juan Manuel Fangio in 1957.
Despite frequently being linked with Ferrari throughout his career, Hamilton seemed poised to conclude his career with Mercedes. In fact, last season he dismissed speculations about joining the Italian outfit. However, negotiations have reportedly accelerated in recent months, with Ferrari Chairman John Elkann determined to secure a marquee signing such as Hamilton.
Ferrari had a world champion driver on their roster from 1996, when Michael Schumacher joined, until 2020, when Sebastian Vettel departed. In 2021, Charles Leclerc joined the team, extending his contract until at least 2026.
Frederic Vasseur, the team principal at Ferrari, played a pivotal role in Hamilton’s junior career, having guided him to a GP2 title in 2006 when they were both with the ART team. Vasseur is likely involved in the ongoing negotiations.
Sainz, who joined Ferrari alongside Leclerc, had been rumored as a potential candidate for Audi’s forthcoming F1 venture in 2026. However, with Hamilton’s anticipated arrival, Sainz is now expected to exit Ferrari earlier than anticipated.
Sainz, a former Red Bull driver, could potentially return to his old team in 2025 if Sergio Perez’s future remains uncertain. He could also emerge as a strong contender for the vacant seat at Mercedes left by Hamilton’s departure.
Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes will undoubtedly leave a massive void. Having joined the team in 2013, he clinched six drivers’ championships and contributed to the team’s incredible stretch of eight consecutive constructors’ championships between 2014 and 2021.
