Diogo Jota Liverpool Tribute

Liverpool, England — Fans and players of Liverpool Football Club paid tribute to their late forward Diogo Jota in their first match at Anfield since his untimely death. Jota, 28, passed away while in Spain with his brother, Andre Silva, on July 4.

The Reds faced Athletic Bilbao in a doubleheader of preseason friendlies on Monday, where special tributes were made prior to the games. Liverpool legend Phil Thompson and Athletic president Jon Uriarte brought wreaths onto the pitch, laying them in front of the six-yard box in remembrance of Jota.

Fans around Anfield displayed billboards reading, “Rest in Peace Diogo Jota and Andre Silva – You’ll Never Walk Alone,” while supporters sang songs dedicated to the beloved player. Flags and banners were also raised, commemorating Jota’s jersey number, 20, which has been retired by the club following his passing.

All players, coaches, and fans paused to applaud in the 20th minute of both games in memory of Jota, who scored 65 goals during his 182 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Wolverhampton in 2020. His contributions helped the club secure the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup titles.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot addressed the somber atmosphere in the match program, saying, “It has been a tough time for everyone connected with the club, especially for Diogo’s family, his wife, his children, and friends. We cannot imagine the pain that they have been going through.”

Slot also underscored the support from the Liverpool community, stating, “We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go.”

The match against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield takes place this Sunday, with the Premier League season opener scheduled at Anfield against Bournemouth on August 15.
