Local Homeless Shelter Prepares for Surge in Demand Amid Freezing Temperatures
With the extreme freezing temperatures expected in the upcoming days, St. John's, a local homeless shelter in Green Bay, is making necessary preparations to accommodate an anticipated influx of individuals seeking shelter.
Jesse Brunette, the Executive Director of St. John’s, explained how their dedicated staff is gearing up to support and provide shelter for everyone in need.
‘During severe weather conditions, we usually observe a rise in the number of guests seeking shelter. In response, we will have additional staff on hand. In extreme situations, we may even keep the shelter open during the day or extend the hours of our daytime resource center. We strive to be adaptable and meet the needs of our community,’ emphasized Brunette.
Last week, Green Bay experienced two major snowstorms, causing St. John’s to reach its capacity at both their Men’s and Women’s shelters. However, Brunette assured that the organization is committed to ensuring no one is turned away.
‘We currently have enough space to meet people’s needs, and we will not reject anyone seeking shelter. Our primary goal is to provide a pathway out of homelessness, and offering shelter during inclement weather plays a significant role in that mission,’ added Brunette.
In order to accommodate a potentially higher demand, St. John’s is prepared to transport individuals between their different shelter facilities, guaranteeing that everyone has access to a safe and warm place to stay.
