Local Nipper Recognized for Heroic Lifesaving Action
In February 2024, a young competitor from the Mordialloc Surf Life Saving Club named Dylan made headlines for his remarkable act of bravery during a surf carnival held at Point Leo. While competing, Dylan noticed a fellow participant struggling underwater in distress.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Dylan stopped his race to assist the struggling individual, bringing them to the surface and ensuring their safety before returning to his event. He then guided the fellow competitor to the finish line, showcasing his commitment to safety and teamwork.
In recognition of his life-saving actions, Dylan was awarded the Everyday Lifesaver Award by the Victorian Government‘s Play it Safe by the Water committee. The esteemed Life Saving Victoria General Manager, Kate Simpson, presented the award during a general school assembly at Dylan’s institution.
During the presentation, Dylan shared valuable advice regarding water safety. He emphasized the importance of seeking assistance from someone knowledgeable if one is not trained in water safety. “If you don’t know how to swim and you go out, then there’ll be two people in trouble,” he stated. He encouraged others to consider learning lifesaving skills to enhance their abilities in emergency situations.
Throughout the event, Dylan reiterated the significance of looking out for one another when swimming. He warned that Victorian waters can be unpredictable, and highlighted that learning to swim, understanding conditions, and keeping an eye on friends can significantly prevent accidents.
