St. Louis Mayoral Election Candidates Forum

ST. LOUIS — Voters in St. Louis are heading to the polls on March 4 for the municipal primary election, which will determine the candidates for key city positions, including the mayoral race. Incumbent Mayor Tishaura Jones will face off against three challengers: Alderwoman Cara Spencer, Recorder of Deeds Michael Butler, and businessman Andrew Jones Jr. The primary is crucial as the top two candidates from each race will advance to the general election on April 8.

The election comes amid heightened interest in local politics as the city prepares for a significant shift in leadership. Mayor Jones, a Democrat, is seeking a second term. She previously won the mayoral primary in 2021 with 57% of the votes. As for the other positions, the comptroller’s race features incumbent Darlene Green against former state legislator Donna Baringer.

According to the city’s nonpartisan approval voting system, voters can select as many candidates as they prefer. The two candidates receiving the highest approval percentages will advance to the general election, with results from the primary expected to be closely watched.

Polls on Election Day will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and results will be updated live as they come in. The upcoming elections also include key races for the St. Louis Board of Aldermen, with several wards contesting for positions.

The approval voting mechanism allows voters to endorse multiple candidates, making it possible for candidates to receive varying levels of support without a traditional winner-takes-all scenario. This method was first introduced in St. Louis during the previous mayoral primary.

In the latest polls conducted by Remington Research Group, a head-to-head rematch between Jones and Spencer appears likely. The dynamic in St. Louis politics has garnered significant national attention, and the outcome of these elections may result in crucial changes for local governance.

As election day approaches, residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the candidates and their platforms to make informed decisions. Voter engagement has been emphasized, with opportunities for early voting and resources available to assist residents in the voting process.

This election not only affects the leadership in St. Louis but also sets the stage for broader implications in upcoming legislative sessions, particularly as local leaders respond to ongoing challenges. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops.
