Canadian Egg Recall Salmonella Contamination 2025

OTTAWA, Canada — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a nationwide recall for specific batches of six major egg brands due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall affects Golden Valley, Compliments, Foremost, IGA, No Name, and Western Family eggs, with varying sizes and packaging included. The recall notice, issued on January 18, 2025, applies to eggs with expiration dates of February 16, February 22, and March 1.

The CFIA warned that contaminated eggs may not appear or smell spoiled but can still cause serious illness. “Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but is still capable of making people sick,” the agency stated. Those most at risk include young children, pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The recall initially included British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, but Alberta and Saskatchewan were later removed from the notice. The CFIA advised consumers to check lot numbers on egg cartons and discard or return any affected products to the place of purchase. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.

“Anyone who believes they have become sick from consuming contaminated eggs should call their health-care provider,” the CFIA emphasized. The agency also urged retailers and distributors to remove the recalled products from shelves immediately.

This recall follows a recent salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupes, which resulted in five deaths in Canada. The CFIA continues to investigate the source of the contamination and has not yet identified the specific cause of the salmonella presence in the eggs.
