Mark Ruffalo Defends Marvel Amid Criticism From Filmmaker Scorsese

LOS ANGELES, CA — Actor Mark Ruffalo recently addressed ongoing criticism of Marvel movies during an interview on the show “We’re Not Kidding with Mehdi Hasan.” When asked about remarks from acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who previously dismissed superhero films as “not cinema,” Ruffalo shared his perspective on the genre’s significance.
“I just see it as acting and storytelling. I like to do it all. I don’t give a s—,” Ruffalo said, emphasizing the creative opportunities that come with working on Marvel projects. He noted that his background in theater allows him to explore multiple genres without limitations.
Ruffalo, best known for his role as the Hulk, highlighted the creative energy that varies with each Marvel film. He cited projects like “Avengers” and “Thor: Ragnarok” as examples of how different directors bring distinctive experiences to the franchise. “I never thought I’d have a real, legit steady job,” he reflected, pointing out the continuity and growth he experiences while portraying the Hulk.
During the interview, Ruffalo recalled attending a screening of “Avengers: Endgame” with his son. He described the audience’s emotional reactions, saying, “I have never sat in one of those movies where I’ve seen people literally screaming, crying, beating their chests.” This exemplified for him the cultural impact Marvel films have on fans.
Despite the criticism, Ruffalo maintained that Marvel movies have significant cinematic value. “It’s all storytelling,” he asserted, while also emphasizing that he chooses artistic projects that entertain and challenge him. He concluded by expressing gratitude for the teams and culture surrounding Marvel productions, stating, “I’m having the best time and I love it.”
