Threads And Bluesky User Growth After Elon Musk Trump Backing

In the wake of Elon Musk‘s public support for Donald Trump, social media platforms Threads and Bluesky have seen a significant surge in user sign-ups. Over the last 24 hours, more than 1 million users have joined Threads, while Bluesky, an alternative to Musk’s X, has also experienced a substantial increase in its user base.

Threads, owned by Meta, has reported over 15 million sign-ups in November alone, with an average of 1 million new users per day over the last three months. This rapid growth is attributed to users seeking alternatives to X following Musk’s backing of Trump during the U.S. presidential elections.

Bluesky, co-founded by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, has also seen a notable increase in its popularity. The platform suffered a brief outage on Thursday due to an external issue with an internet provider, but this did not deter new users. Bluesky’s total user count has surged to 15 million, up from 13 million at the end of October.

The exodus from X is part of a broader trend of social media fragmentation, with users increasingly dispersing across multiple platforms. This shift is driven by dissatisfaction with X’s content algorithm and Musk’s influence on the platform. Many high-profile users have reported significant losses in followers on X, which they attribute to the platform’s changing dynamics.

As Threads and Bluesky gain traction, they are positioning themselves as friendlier and more inclusive alternatives to X. Threads is moving towards greater independence from Instagram, its parent platform, to further differentiate itself.
