Beloved actor Mekhi Phifer, known for his versatility and wide-ranging roles, has emerged as one of the most respected figures in the film and television industry over the past 25 years. The Harlem native has built an impressive resume with both TV and film credits over the years. On television, Phifer made notable appearances in productions such as “Carmen: A Hip Hopera” (2001), NBC‘s medical drama “ER,” and “The Bobby Brown Story” (2018). He also featured in “Torchwood: Miracle Day” and “House of Lies.” On the film front, Phifer began his career with Spike Lee‘s film “Clockers” and went on to star in various other films including “High School High,” “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,” “Shaft,” “Paid in Full,” and “8 Mile.”

In his latest venture, Phifer stars in the newly released crime-action thriller “Long Gone Heroes.” The film portrays a special forces soldier who returns to battle to track down his niece amid an illegal private contracting operation. The film’s ensemble cast includes Frank Grillo, Josh Hutcherson, Eden Brolin, Wendy Moniz and Andy Garcia.

Interestingly, acting was not always Phifer’s aspiration. During high school, he intended to pursue a career in electrical engineering and was taking classes at Columbia University. “I was gearing up to go to college after graduation,” Phifer recounted to BET.com. However, an open casting call for Spike Lee’s “Clockers” changed his path drastically when he secured the lead role, despite lacking prior acting experience.

Phifer reminisced about his early appearances in music videos for En Vogue, Keith Sweat, and Brandy and Monica, describing them as “the good old days.”

Reflecting on his sustained success, Phifer attributes it to his love for the craft, adaptability, and the ability to consistently deliver over time. “To sustain a career in film and television, it takes being willing to hone in on the craft and keep learning,” he noted, further emphasizing the importance of building a name and maintaining industry relationships.

Phifer was approached to play the role of Moreao in “Long Gone Heroes” by Frank Grillo, with whom he previously collaborated. “Having great relationships in the industry is another way to stay relevant,” Phifer explained.

He expressed admiration for co-star Andy Garcia, calling it “a blessing” to work alongside an actor he revered as a child. “It’s funny because I told him the story…about going to see all these great films,” he shared about his past as a fan of Garcia’s work.

Phifer acknowledged that “Long Gone Heroes,” though not a political movie, touches on relevant themes given the current socio-political climate. “With the current political climate, the film will really hit home for some people,” he said.

The film, rated PG-13, debuts on Friday, September 20, with Phifer emphasizing its appeal to audiences of all ages. “It’s just one of those films where everyone can have a good time,” he stated, encouraging cinema-goers to enjoy the “good Saturday night movie” experience.
