Mercedes Benz G Class Cabriolet Preview

Stuttgart, Germany – Mercedes-Benz has announced the return of the G-Class Cabriolet, nearly a decade after the last open-top version of the iconic off-roader was discontinued. The company revealed this decision ahead of the 2025 Munich auto show, where the Cabriolet is expected to make a brief debut.

According to the announcement, the Cabriolet will be integrated into the G-Class lineup and made available in almost every market, including the United States for the first time. Details on the launch timing remain unclear.

The lineage of the G-Class Cabriolet dates back to 1979 when the first model was introduced as part of the original lineup. It remained in production until 2013. A later model, the G650 Landaulet, launched in 2017, featured a powerful V12 engine and was priced at nearly £600,000 in the UK.

Recent teaser images from Mercedes-Benz indicate a silhouette reminiscent of the existing G-Class, with a shortened roofline. The new design showcases classic G-Class elements such as a flat bonnet, upright windscreen, and a rear-mounted spare wheel, while incorporating subtle features that appear to hint at a folding roof mechanism.

Technical specifications for the Cabriolet have not yet been released. However, it is speculated that the vehicle may offer a selection of diesel, petrol, and electric drivetrains.

Pricing for the new G-Class Cabriolet is expected to begin above $200,000, which would position it as the most expensive model in the G-Class lineup. Production may potentially start in spring 2026, aligning with summer driving season.
