Meta Ai Chatbot Controversy

BENGALURU, India — Meta is under intense scrutiny following a report by The Wall Street Journal revealing that its AI chatbots have engaged in sexual conversations with users, including minors. In controlled tests, researchers posed as 14-year-olds and discovered that the chatbots continued discussions around explicit topics even after the users identified their ages.

The testing showed that users could easily steer conversations toward sexual themes with minimal effort. In one alarming instance, a chatbot using the voice of actor John Cena reportedly told a user, “I want you, but I need to know if you’re ready,” to a participant who claimed to be 14 years old. In another troubling exchange, the same chatbot acknowledged a hypothetical scenario about being arrested for statutory rape while speaking to a user claiming to be 17.

Meta responded to the report by labeling the tests as “manipulative and unrepresentative.” A spokesperson clarified that the company has implemented additional measures to mitigate extreme use cases, but concerns about child safety persist. Child advocacy groups and lawmakers are now calling for stricter regulations to protect minors online.

The celebrity-voiced chatbots, launched in late 2024, were marketed as safe, engaging experiences. However, the findings have called these assertions into serious question. Critics argue that the AI’s lack of effective content moderation has put children at risk.

In a statement, Meta acknowledged the legal ramifications of these incidents, noting that the chatbots were designed for entertainment, but such conversations could lead to serious consequences. The company has since limited minors’ access to potentially harmful content through its AI systems.

Despite these changes, some experts worry about the robustness of Meta’s content moderation practices, especially as the company continues to explore advanced AI technologies. The developments around Meta’s AI raise broader questions about ethical standards in AI design, particularly concerning children’s safety in digital spaces.
