Douglas County Colorado Missing Child Recovery

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — A Georgia boy missing for seven years was found alive in Colorado after authorities arrested his mother for alleged burglary activities. Abdul Aziz Khan, now 14, was discovered on February 23, 2025, following a police response to a break-in at a vacant home.

Rabia Khalid, 40, was taken into custody during an investigation led by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were dispatched to the property in Highlands Ranch after the homeowner reported suspicious activity. They found two children in a vehicle outside, along with Khalid and a man named Elliot Blake Bourgeois, who were initially claiming to be associated with a real estate venture.

Authorities later revealed that Khalid was wanted in connection with her son’s 2017 abduction. The U.S. Marshals Service, which had been involved in the search for the boy, confirmed that Khan was the older child found in the car.

“There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when I met with the family,” Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said during a press conference. “They are extremely grateful for our deputies’ ability to identify what was going on to bring Aziz home.”

Khalid and Bourgeois, 42, face several serious charges, including second-degree kidnapping, forgery, and identity theft. They are being held on a $1 million bond each. Khalid’s attorney, Kyle Sawyer, stated he is reviewing information related to the case and plans to provide a strong defense for his client.

Aziz’s family expressed their profound relief in a public statement, saying, “We’re overwhelmed with joy that Aziz has finally been found. We specifically want to recognize the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for their exceptional work in solving this case.” They requested privacy as they move forward.

Khan was originally reported missing in November 2017, during a contentious custody battle between his parents while living in Atlanta. His father, Abdul Khan, had frequent visitations and was actively seeking full custody when Rabia Khalid allegedly took him. A felony warrant for Khalid was issued in December 2019 after extensive search efforts by law enforcement proved fruitless.

Throughout the years, this high-profile case gained attention, even being featured on Netflix’s “Unsolved Mysteries.” The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office quickly acted when they identified Khalid and Bourgeois at the scene of the alleged burglary, uncovering inconsistencies in the couple’s story.

Detectives utilized a portable fingerprint scanner to confirm Khalid’s identity, establishing her link to the kidnapping case. Following several hours of questioning, they discovered various fake identifications in the children’s vehicle and recognized Abdul as the missing child.

“The child appeared healthy,” Sheriff Weekly noted, emphasizing the urgent nature of their protective custody. Decisions regarding the children’s future placements will be made by the court. Investigators are still piecing together the activities of Khalid and Bourgeois over the past seven years.

Weekly added that although some aspects of the case remain unresolved, the recovery of Abdul Aziz Khan marks a significant turning point for the family. The local community has expressed heartfelt support for the transition process they will now undergo.
