MuppetVision 3D to Close at Disney’s Hollywood Studios; Muppets to Take Over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster
Walt Disney World has announced the permanent closure of MuppetVision 3D at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The beloved 3D show, which was the last project worked on by Jim Henson before his death, has been a staple at the park since its opening on May 16, 1991. The closure is to make way for a new Monsters, Inc. land, which was originally planned to replace the Star Wars Launch Bay area but will now occupy the Grand Avenue area where MuppetVision 3D is currently located.
The new Monsters, Inc. land, themed as Monstropolis, will feature a suspended coaster inspired by the door transportation system from the original film, along with dining, shopping, and a theater experience. The footprint of Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano will also be taken over by a new venue themed after Harryhausen’s from the Monsters, Inc. franchise.
To compensate for the loss of MuppetVision 3D, the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith will be reimagined with the Muppets as the new stars. The Muppets, including Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, will take over the indoor roller coaster, transforming it into a “rockin’ music festival” featuring the Muppets. The exit gift store, Rock Around the Shop, will also be converted to sell Muppets-themed merchandise.
Disney has assured fans that the MuppetVision 3D film has been digitized and will be preserved, although it is unclear if it will be featured in any future attractions. Guests will have sufficient time to experience both Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith and MuppetVision 3D before their final curtain calls, with more details on the changes to be shared next year.
