NASA astronaut Sunita Williams marked her 59th birthday aboard the International Space Station (ISS) on September 19, 2024. Rather than engaging in traditional birthday celebrations, such as cake and candles, Williams devoted her day to significant maintenance tasks and scientific research as part of her mission.

Currently in the midst of her third spaceflight, Williams dedicated her efforts alongside fellow astronaut Don Pettit to ensure the smooth operation of the ISS. The pair focused on maintaining the station’s crucial life support systems by replacing filters in the waste and hygiene compartment, commonly referred to as the space bathroom. This task is essential for maintaining a clean and functional living environment for the crew.

Williams also participated in a conference with flight directors at NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston. During these discussions with fellow astronauts Barry Wilmore and Frank Rubio, they reviewed mission objectives and future tasks, exemplifying the ongoing collaboration between the ISS crew and ground control.

Her mission, which commenced in June 2024, has been extended due to technical challenges with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. As a result, Williams’ return to Earth is now scheduled for February 2025, which may see her breaking records for the cumulative time spent in space.

In a heartwarming gesture from Earth, Indian music company Saregama orchestrated a special musical tribute for Williams’ birthday. Renowned singers such as Sonu Nigam and Neeti Mohan performed a rendition of the classic birthday song “Bar Bar Din Ye Aaye.” This congratulatory message was shared on Instagram, featuring filmmaker Karan Johar, and encouraged fans to post their own birthday wishes using the hashtag #HappyBirthdaySunita.

Williams has had a distinguished career both on the ground and in space. She became a naval test pilot in 1993, having flown over 30 aircraft, and joined NASA’s astronaut program in 1998. Her first journey into space occurred in 2006 with STS-116, and she later commanded Expedition 33 in 2012. Williams is recognized for her extensive spacewalking time and even completed a triathlon in orbit.

Significantly, Williams played a crucial role in NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, piloting the first crewed test flight of Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner to the ISS in 2024. Despite facing technical setbacks, this mission was a success, marking a pivotal advancement in private spacecraft missions.
