Nationwide Recall Issued for Enoki Mushrooms Over Listeria Contamination

Brooklyn, New York – Harvest NYC Inc. has announced a nationwide recall of its 200-gram packages of Enoki Mushrooms due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall was made public on April 16 and later confirmed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on April 18, prompting immediate consumer action.
The recalled Enoki Mushrooms, distributed under the Hofood99 Inc. brand, are packaged in green plastic containers marked with UPC barcode 6975730520101. They were sold across the country in retail stores between January 11 and January 31, 2025.
Despite no reported illnesses linked to the contaminated mushrooms, health officials warn that Listeria poses serious health risks, especially for vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms linked with Listeria infections can include high fever, severe headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. For pregnant women, listeriosis can lead to miscarriages or stillbirths.
The potential contamination was detected during routine testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Laboratory from samples collected at a store in Buffalo, New York. Following this finding, Harvest NYC Inc. took precautionary measures to initiate the recall.
Consumers who purchased the affected products are strongly urged to either discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. In their announcement, Harvest NYC Inc. emphasized, “Consumers with questions may contact the company at (718) 596-0777.” The FDA further stated that when a recall is issued, it posts the company’s announcement as a public service but does not endorse the product or company.
For those checking their kitchens, the affected 200g Enoki Mushroom containers can be identified by the UPC code located on the back label. It is essential for consumers to verify any Enoki mushrooms in their refrigerators against this recall to prevent potential health hazards.
