NBA Legend Dwyane Wade Reveals Cancer Diagnosis, Kidney Surgery
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade disclosed Thursday that he underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his kidney more than a year ago. The 43-year-old basketball legend shared the news during an episode of his podcast, “The Why With Dwyane Wade.”
Wade revealed that 40% of his right kidney was removed on Dec. 18, 2023, after doctors discovered a tumor during a routine check-up. The diagnosis came after years of avoiding physical exams, he said. “On the process of checking, like, ‘Why is my piss coming out slow, why is my stream ain’t powerful? Why is it a little weak?'” Wade recounted on the podcast.
Multiple doctors confirmed the need for surgery, and post-operation tests revealed the tumor was cancerous. “My family…saw me weak. That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life,” Wade said, reflecting on the emotional toll of the experience.
Wade, a Chicago native and Marquette University alumnus, led the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Final Four in 2003 before being drafted fifth overall by the Miami Heat. Over his 16-year NBA career, he won three championships, earned 13 All-Star selections, and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 68,000 people were diagnosed with kidney and renal pelvis cancer in 2021, with over 43,000 cases involving men. Risk factors include smoking, obesity, and certain genetic conditions.
Wade emphasized the importance of family support during his recovery. “I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me, and in that process, in my weakness, I found strength in my family,” he said. The retired athlete shares five children, including his daughter Kaavia James, 6, with wife Gabrielle Union.
No further details about Wade’s current health were provided.
