Ncuti Gatwa Breaks Silence On Millie Gibson's Reported Departure From Doctor Who

Ncuti Gatwa, known for his role in the popular show Sex Education, has finally addressed the news surrounding Millie Gibson‘s reported departure from the hit sci-fi series Doctor Who. Millie, a former Coronation Street actress, had made her much-anticipated debut as the companion Ruby Sunday in the show’s 2023 Christmas special.

The upcoming season of Doctor Who, set to air in May, will see Ncuti taking over as the iconic Time Lord. However, it has now been revealed that Millie’s character Ruby has already been written out of the show by the showrunner Russell T Davies. Rumor has it that Varada Sethu will be replacing her for Ncuti’s second series.

Ncuti took to his Instagram Stories to share a photo with Millie, accompanied by a heartfelt message: ‘My lil [heart emoji].’ Millie herself has remained silent on the reports, but she recently posted a clip on her Instagram Stories driving out of Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica.

An insider revealed, ‘Millie Gibson has all but left now and there’s a brand new companion, which is really exciting. Russell is keeping things moving and isn’t letting the grass grow, that’s for sure.’ It is speculated that Millie will only appear in a handful of episodes to wrap up her character’s storylines, and she will not be back for the 2024 Christmas special. The new companion, Varada Sethu, has already started filming at the show’s studios in Cardiff and is set to join Ncuti for this year’s holiday episode.

Varada Sethu, 32, is best known for her role as DS Mishal Ali in the BBC series Hard Sun and her appearance in the movie Now You See Me 2 alongside Michael Caine. She has also been featured in Disney’s Star Wars spin-off series Andor, starring Diego Luna.

Previous Doctor Who companions, such as Pearl Mackie’s Bill Potts, only had a one-series run on the show. However, others, like Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald, Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler, and Karen Gillan’s Amy Pond, stayed on for several years.
