Netflix's Loss, Universal's Gain: Dev Patel's 'monkey Man' Changes Distributors

Netflix‘s highly anticipated film, ‘Monkey Man‘, has undergone a surprising change in distributors, resulting in Universal Pictures acquiring the rights for a theatrical release. This action thriller marks the directorial debut of actor Dev Patel, who also stars in the film alongside Sharlto Copley.

The film had initially been acquired by Netflix for a staggering $30 million, but after a long delay of three years, the streaming giant decided to pass ‘Monkey Man’ to Jordan Peele’s production company, Monkey Paw. Netflix’s cautiousness appears to stem from concerns about its growing presence in India, particularly regarding the portrayal of a fictional right-wing Hindu Nationalist character in the film.

Universal Pictures, in collaboration with Jordan Peele, recognized the potential of ‘Monkey Man’ and decided to team up on its release. They even suggested possible editing changes to ensure the film’s success. With India being a key growth market for Netflix, it was a strategic decision driven by politics and optics.

The trailer for ‘Monkey Man’ was released just a day ago and has already garnered significant attention, amassing millions of views. If the film lives up to expectations and receives positive reviews, Universal and Peele may have a hit on their hands.

‘Monkey Man’ is set in Mumbai and follows the story of an ex-felon who struggles to adapt to a world saturated with corporate greed and declining spiritual values. While some have compared the film to ‘John Wick‘, insiders who have seen ‘Monkey Man’ suggest that it offers a unique and different cinematic experience.
