Netflix to Remove The Running Man Just Before Edgar Wright’s Remake
Los Angeles, CA — Fans of Stephen King have a lot to celebrate this year, but time is running out for those wanting to revisit one of his notable works. Netflix is set to remove the 1987 film The Running Man on November 1, 2025, just 11 days before Edgar Wright’s eagerly awaited remake hits theaters.
The original film, which stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ben Richards, presents a dystopian totalitarian America where reality television takes a deadly turn. This adaptation of King’s 1982 novel, published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, showcases a desperate man who volunteers for a lethal game show in hopes of winning money to save his family. King’s story painted a critical view of society’s obsession with entertainment and violence.
The Running Man was released on November 13, 1987, and follows Richards as he is wrongfully imprisoned and coerced into participating in a deadly televised competition, hosted by Damon Killian, played by Richard Dawson. Despite its lukewarm reception at the box office, grossing just over $38 million, the film has gained a cult following for its mix of dark humor and social commentary.
Fans are particularly frustrated with Netflix’s scheduling, as they were hoping to rewatch the original before seeing the new film, which stars Glen Powell as a new version of Ben Richards. This remake, set to release on November 11, promises to return to the darker themes of the book, with Richards entering the contest not just for survival, but to afford medicine for his family.
The supporting cast for the new film includes Josh Brolin as the manipulative producer and Colman Domingo as the game show host. Wright, who has a unique style seen in films like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Bacall.
For those craving to watch The Running Man before it leaves Netflix, alternatives are available. The film will remain streamable on Paramount+ and BBC America post-November 1. Additionally, AMC+ subscribers will also lose access to the movie the same day. It can be rented on various platforms like Apple TV, Plex, Fandango At Home, and Amazon.
This year has seen a resurgence in Stephen King adaptations, with works like The Monkey, The Life of Chuck, and The Long Walk arriving on screens. Meanwhile, King has also published a new mystery novel featuring Holly Gibney titled Never Flinch.
As excitement builds for the remake, the removal of The Running Man from Netflix serves as a reminder of the fleeting nature of streaming rights. Fans are encouraged to catch Schwarzenegger’s version while they still can, as the new interpretation promises to reexamine King’s intent and vision for a new generation.
