The newly elected Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir, has stirred controversy by appointing five traditional rulers in the state. This move comes after the removal of the former emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, by the Abdullahi Ganduje-led state government in December 2019. The traditional rulers were sworn in today, Thursday, May 23, following the submission of a list containing their names and titles to the state government. Among the appointed rulers are the Madaki of Kano, the district head of Dawakin-Tofa, and the Makama of Kano, among others.

In a surprising turn of events, it was reported that Muhammadu Sanusi II had been dethroned just four years into his reign. This decision came after the state assembly confirmed the removal of five traditional rulers, including the former emir, who is now succeeded by the newly appointed rulers. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf made the announcement of Muhammadu Sanusi II’s replacement as the Emir of Kano on Thursday, May 23.
