New Hampshire Offers Vaccinations for Respiratory Illnesses This Fall
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – New Hampshire health officials announced that vaccines for respiratory viruses, including flu, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), are widely available across the state as fall arrives.
Dr. Gabriela Andujar, an epidemiologist at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated before Halloween to ensure effectiveness throughout flu season. She stated, “When we start entering fall and winter, we start thinking about respiratory viruses.”
Vaccination significantly lowers the risk of severe illness, which could result in hospitalization or death. Andujar explained, “It reduces the chances that you will get the infection itself, but it’s not 100%.” She noted that flu viruses mutate quickly, affecting vaccine effectiveness.
State health officials recommend specific vaccinations: RSV vaccinations for older adults and infants under eight months, a flu shot for individuals over six months old, and the COVID-19 vaccine for older adults, children under two, pregnant women, and anyone with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Benjamin Chan, the state epidemiologist, stated, “New and updated flu and COVID-19 vaccines, in addition to existing RSV immunizations, are widely available,” urging individuals to consult their healthcare providers regarding recommended vaccines.
In addition, the Department of Health and Human Services encourages preventive measures at home, like washing hands, covering mouths when sneezing or coughing, and remaining at home when sick to curb the spread of illness.
