New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy Responds to Trump’s Presidential Win
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has broken his silence on the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, following President Donald Trump‘s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. In a written statement, Murphy acknowledged the results, emphasizing the importance of respecting the will of the people despite the pain and difficulty many may feel.
Murphy noted that the country is deeply divided and that “the bonds between our fellow citizens have grown so frayed.” He highlighted his administration’s efforts during Trump’s first term to defend various rights and advance policies beneficial to New Jerseyans, while also acknowledging the ability to work with Trump on certain initiatives.
The governor’s statement comes after his attorney general threatened Trump with legal action if he were to use his position to unlawfully attack the rights of New Jersey residents. This tension is set against the backdrop of Trump’s significant inroads in New Jersey, including seven counties flipping to support him in the election.
Despite their party and ideological differences, Murphy and Trump had a relatively cordial relationship during Trump’s first term, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Murphy even met with Trump at his Bedminster golf club following a failed assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.
Murphy’s statement has been met with mixed reactions, including criticism and vitriol from some quarters. With term limits set to end his tenure next year, Murphy’s comments reflect a mix of acceptance and a call for unity in a deeply divided country).
