New Jersey Starts ANCHOR Property Tax Relief Payments, Check Your Eligibility
Trenton, New Jersey – New Jersey has begun sending ANCHOR (Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters) property tax relief payments, but many residents are still wondering when they will receive theirs. According to Jeremy Lemmon, a spokesman for the NJ Department of Treasury, as of Friday, 352,000 payments have been sent out, totaling more than $489 million.
The payments are being distributed on a rolling basis, with those who filed paper applications receiving checks first, while online applicants have the option to receive either a direct deposit or a check. Out of the total payments, 251,000 were made via paper checks worth over $372 million, and 101,000 were processed as direct deposits totaling more than $117 million.
Starting Wednesday, checks will be sent out to non-senior residents. Eligible homeowners can expect to receive $1,500, while renters will get $450. Senior homeowners can receive up to $1,750 and senior renters up to $700, depending on their income.
Eligibility for ANCHOR benefits includes homeowners who pay property taxes and renters who pay rent. If residents did not receive an auto-file confirmation letter but think they qualify, they can still apply on their own. The Department of Taxation also provides in-person assistance throughout the state until the end of October.
The deadline for returning beneficiaries under age 65 was September 15, with October 31 being the final deadline for new applicants. For more information, residents can visit the NJ Division of Taxation’s website or attend the Property Tax Relief Public Events.
