Cupertino, California — New rumors about Apple‘s upcoming iPhone 17 Air suggest that the device could measure just 5.5 millimeters in thickness, potentially making it the thinnest smartphone on the market. Recent images shared by a notable mobile news leaker on X depict the iPhone 17 Air next to the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which measures 8.25mm thick.

If the claims are accurate, the iPhone 17 Air will not only be thinner than its predecessor, but it will also surpass the thickness of Samsung‘s upcoming devices, which are rumored to be around 5.8mm thick. Reports indicate that the device may challenge the concept phone revealed at MWC 2025, noted for its 5.75mm thickness.

Despite the excitement, industry experts suggest that Apple is unlikely to shatter the existing records for smartphone thinness; for example, previous models such as the Vivo X5 Max reached only 4.75mm. However, analysts believe the iPhone 17 Air could lay claim to the title of “world’s thinnest smartphone,” fitting well within Apple’s marketing strategy of promoting innovation.

Accompanying images also reveal a new camera module design borrowing from Google‘s visor-style approach, seen first in its Pixel series. The iPhone 17 Air’s Action Button placement mirrors that of the thicker models, resting above the volume controls. Notably, the Camera Control was not discernable in the images, potentially obscured by the individual holding the device.

These mockups are based on leaked details and should not be interpreted as the final design of the iPhone 17 Air. Historically, Apple tends to unveil new models in September, suggesting an official announcement may soon follow.

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has indicated that Apple might overcome the battery life concerns posed by such a thin design by utilizing a high-density battery, capable of holding more charge in less space. Although the specific capacity of the battery has yet to be disclosed, the implementation of high-density cells could be a game-changer for the device’s usability.

With a design that forgoes the Ultra Wide camera, the iPhone 17 Air may have additional internal space dedicated to battery life, which is an essential feature for smartphone users. Kuo notes that combined with a power-efficient C1 modem, this could significantly enhance battery performance.

As speculation mounts regarding pricing and features, market watchers are keen to see how Apple positions the iPhone 17 Air against competitors. While the increased thickness of the iPhone 17 Pro Max at 8.725mm suggests a trade-off in design flexibility, it remains to be seen if Apple will maintain their pricing strategy compared to the iPhone 16 Plus.

In summary, the iPhone 17 Air is shaping up to be an exciting addition to Apple’s lineup, with impressive design elements and technological advancements. As the September reveal approaches, consumers and analysts alike are watching closely, eager to learn more about what Apple has in store.
