New York Magazine Correspondent Olivia Nuzzi on Leave After Relationship Allegations
New York Magazine has placed its Washington correspondent, Olivia Nuzzi, on leave following allegations of her involvement in a romantic relationship. The allegations suggest she engaged with a former subject she covered during the 2024 presidential campaign. This announcement was made after a source disclosed the information to The Hollywood Reporter.
The magazine issued a statement on Thursday explaining, “Recently our Washington Correspondent Olivia Nuzzi acknowledged to the magazine’s editors that she had engaged in a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while she was reporting on the campaign, a violation of the magazine’s standards around conflicts of interest and disclosures.” They further stated that had they been aware of this relationship, she would not have continued covering the presidential campaign. An internal review found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias in her published work. However, the magazine is now conducting a more comprehensive third-party investigation.
Reliable sources have linked these allegations to Kennedy, though the magazine has not confirmed this connection. It appears that Nuzzi did not inform the magazine of her relationship with Kennedy, and the editors only learned about it recently. According to reports, the alleged relationship began early in 2024, following her profile on the former presidential candidate.
Olivia Nuzzi, in a statement, admitted, “Earlier this year, the nature of some communication between myself and a former reporting subject turned personal. During that time, I did not directly report on the subject nor use them as a source.” She emphasized that their relationship was never physical, but acknowledged the necessity of disclosure to prevent perceived conflicts. “I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I’ve disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York,” Nuzzi added.
Nuzzi has had a notable career in political journalism, having left Fordham University to write for The Daily Beast. She gained recognition during Donald Trump’s presidency through her coverage and sources within the Trump Administration. Her work has frequently been a subject of public and professional interest.
Coincidentally, last month, Kennedy suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed Donald Trump. Kennedy is married to actress Cheryl Hines. The Hollywood Reporter has sought comments from both Nuzzi and Kennedy but has yet to receive a response.
