Newfoundland and Labrador MHA and Cabinet Minister Derrick Bragg Passes Away at Age 59
Newfoundland and Labrador lost a dedicated public servant as Derrick Bragg, MHA for Fogo Island-Cape Freels and a cabinet minister in the provincial government, passed away at the age of 59. Born and raised in Greenspond, Bragg had a strong commitment to his community and the province. He first entered politics in 2015 when he was elected as the MHA for the District of Fogo Island-Cape Freels, marking the beginning of his service to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Throughout his political career, Bragg held various important roles in government. He served as parliamentary secretary for the ministers of fisheries and land resources, as well as municipal affairs and environment. In September 2019, he joined the cabinet as the minister of municipal affairs and environment, in addition to being responsible for the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board and the registrar general.

In August 2020, Bragg’s responsibilities shifted once again as he became the minister of transportation and infrastructure, overseeing the Public Procurement Agency. His dedication to the province’s vital industries led to his appointment as the minister of fisheries, forestry, and agriculture in April 2021.

However, Bragg faced personal challenges as he was diagnosed with tongue cancer in June 2023. Despite his health struggles, he remained committed to his role as a cabinet minister but stepped away from his specific portfolio to focus on his treatment. During his time as the minister of fisheries, Bragg was involved in a high-profile dispute between crab fishermen and the Fish, Food & Allied Workers’ union and the Association of Seafood Producers.
