Nintendo’s New Alarmo: A Novelty Clock with a Gaming Twist
Nintendo, renowned for its innovative approach to gaming, has unveiled another surprise product: a $100 alarm clock named Alarmo. The company, which has previously introduced groundbreaking games like ‘Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom‘ and ‘Super Mario Odyssey‘, continues to maintain its reputation as an industry maverick. Alarmo integrates music and sounds from popular Nintendo games to provide a unique wake-up experience.
Alarmo, launched with much enthusiasm, boasts a round display and internet connectivity. It features sound effects from well-known Nintendo titles such as ‘Breath of the Wild‘, ‘Odyssey‘, ‘Splatoon 3‘, ‘Ring Fit Adventure‘, and ‘Pikmin 4‘. Unexpectedly, the clock is equipped with motion sensors that enhance its interactive features, playing sound effects in response to movement, thus gamifying the waking-up process.
According to CNET‘s Bridget Carey, who managed to test Alarmo at the Nintendo Store, “as soon as you turn it on, Alarmo takes time guiding users through understanding the motion sensor, and positioning it correctly near your bed.” This setup aims to ensure the device functions optimally during the morning routine.
Adding to its array of features, Alarmo also offers sleep tracking capabilities, keeping a record of movements throughout the night. Furthermore, it is capable of playing calming sounds to facilitate a peaceful sleep transition, imitating environments from franchise favorites like ‘Zelda’.
While the price may appear premium for an alarm clock, Alarmo is presented as a technologically advanced device with updates promised over time. Nintendo has an extensive history of releasing novel products, and Alarmo marks another entry into their diverse portfolio that includes devices like the Virtual Boy and the Game Boy Camera.
Scott Stein of CNET notes the potential novelty and technological advancements in Alarmo, saying it “sounds like a smart sleep clock meets a Nintendo immersive bedside friend.” The device is currently available at Nintendo Store locations, with wider availability expected in early 2025. Though requiring a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, the company plans to enhance its offerings with additional features and content.
